Featured Coach

Another very special month in the Lab as we welcome one of the earliest pioneers of existential coaching and figure head of the global existential movement, Emmy van Deurzen, into the Coaching Lab. Emmy co-authored the first book on existential coaching, co-developed the first and only Masters programme, and founded the very school I've trained in. I can't tell you how influentual her work has been to my field, and today I'm more than excited that she's offered her time to join us in the Lab to demonstrate her approach and presence.

Bio & Approach:

Emmy van Deurzen is an existential therapist, counselling psychologist, philosopher and coach, who has worked in the field since 1973 and has published twenty books to date. Her work has been translated into over 30 languages. She founded the Society for Existential Analysis and its journal in 1988, the Regent’s School of Psychotherapy in 1990, and the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling (NSPC) in 1996. She was the driving force behind the First World Congress for Existential Therapy, which was held in London in 2015. This also led to the founding of the Federation for Existential Therapists in Europe (FETE). Emmy continues to co-direct NSPC, the Existential Academy (EA) and Dilemma Consultancy, with Digby Tantam. She is a visiting professor with Middlesex University and current President of the worldwide Existential Movement. Emmy is an international speaker who has given hundreds of presentations and workshops on five continents.

Amongst her books are the bestseller Existential Psychotherapy and Counselling in Practice (Sage, 3d edition 2012), Psychotherapy and the Quest for Happiness (Sage, 2009), Everyday Mysteries (Routledge, 2nd ed, 2010), Paradox and Passion (Wiley, 2nd ed 2015) and Rising from Existential Crisis (PCCS books, 2021). Her next book will be published by both Penguin Press in the UK and Harper Collins in the USA and will be called ‘Beginning to Live: The Art of Existential Freedom’.

About the Lab:

Join us for an inside-look into the inner workings of coaching, find out how and why coaches make certain decisions and how they choose their interventions. You get to witness how the client is experiencing different coaching approaches and we hope you'll get lots of inspiration for your own coaching practice.

After the fishbowl and discussion you'll get a chance to work in triads (coach, client, observer) with the other attendees so that you can take your insights and ideas for a spin, experiment with some new tools and techniques or simply practice some coaching and get some valuable feedback on your work from fellow professional or curious lay clients. Talking about coaching in small groups and sharing our learning with the rest of the group afterward will help us all grow our understanding, knowledge and coaching skills.

Plan for the evening:

  • 6:30 Welcome and networking
  • 6:45 Live coaching session
  • 7:30 Debrief & group discussion
  • 8:30 Optional practice sessions in triads/breakout rooms
  • 9:15 Sharing Insights
  • 9:30 Finish
