Naomi Stadlen obituary

  • Friday 20th June 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Naomi Stadlen, a teacher and research supervisor at NSPC. Naomi joined NSPC as a visiting lecturer 28 years ago, when she designed and subsequently ran the module on 'Families and Family Systems'. Naomi taught this highly successful module to countless students over the years. One group of students helped Naomi to come up with the title of her first book 'What Mothers Do: Especially When it Looks Like Nothing', which became a bestseller.

She went on to write four more books - the fifth, 'A Grand Quarrel: Elizabeth Gaskell, Florence Nightingale and Mothers Today', will be published on 26 June 2025.

Naomi was also a clinical and research supervisor at NSPC and supervised many masters dissertations and doctoral research projects, usually on the topic of motherhood. Naomi's contribution can be seen in the research produced at NSPC.

Outside her work with NSPC, Naomi saw clients privately and ran a mothers' talking group, supporting new mothers in their journey to motherhood. Naomi was always passionate and clear in her values and beliefs, with the aim of helping mothers see the importance of mothering and to find joy in it.

Naomi was part of the NSPC family and she will be greatly missed by all.

Rest in Peace, Naomi.
