Abstract

In this dissertation, I explore Team GB elite Track and Field athletes' reflections on their athletic career transitions some 25 years post hoc. Eight elite athletes, seven male and female, were recruited. All respondents had competed and won medals at Olympic and World Championship level. Semi-structured interviews were employed and the data were thematically analysed. Three main themes were found: Impact of the Media; Arrested Development and Impact of Success on Retirement. the findings were further reviewed using an existential Nietzchean framework of the three metamorphoses of the spirit. Implications for coaches working with elite athletes going through career transition are outlined.
